Workshop offers compassionate competency for relating to LGBTQ persons

Shanks

MTSO will offer a workshop on LGBTQ competency and full inclusion within faith communities at 1 p.m. Nov. 30 in the Alford Centrum on the MTSO campus, 3081 Columbus Pike in Delaware. "Compassionate Competency" will be led by Alex Shanks, project and field director for Equality Ohio, which advocates fair treatment and equal opportunity for all Ohioans regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.

The workshop is free and open to the public. No registration is required. A video stream will be available in real time on MTSO's Livestream page.

Participants will gain knowledge to help them successfully relate to LGBTQ people in their midst with compassion. Shanks will address commonly asked questions, including:

  • What does LGBTQ (and the rest of the acronym) stand for?
  • Why has the word "queer" become more acceptable?
  • What is the difference between gender and sexuality?

Methodist Theological School in Ohio prepares leaders of many faith traditions for lives of lasting significance in service to the church and the world. In addition to the Master of Divinity degree, the school offers master’s degrees in counseling, theological studies and practical theology, along with a Doctor of Ministry degree.
