CARES Act

The Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund-Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students (HEERF), found in Section 18004 of and the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), provides funding to institutions of higher education “to prevent, prepare for, and respond to the coronavirus.” Methodist Theological School in Ohio (MTSO) received funding from the CARES Act to assist students who were affected financially due to the disruption of campus operations. Students who met a specific set of criteria based on guidance from the U.S. Department of Education received a portion of these emergency funds. All funding dispersed to students should be used for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations.

This report provides details on the first award to MTSO received under the HEERF, the funds for Emergency Financial Aid Grant to students under Award No. P425203935.

1. MTSO has signed and returned to the Department the Certification and Agreement and the assurance that the institution has and/or intends to use no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.
2. The total amount of funds MTSO will receive from the Department pursuant to the Institution’s Certification and Agreement (for) Emergency Financial Aid to Students is $18,768.
3. The total amount of Emergency Financial Aid Grants distributed to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of June 17, 2020, is $20,300.
4. The estimated total number of students at MTSO eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act is 58.
5. The total number of students who received an Emergency Financial Aid Grant under Section 18004 (a)(1) of the CARES Act is 58.
6. The method(s) used by MTSO to determine which students receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants and how much they would receive under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act is available here.
7. MTSO sent a letter to all eligible students via email to their school email addresses and hard copy to their home mailing addresses on May 27, 2020. The letter may be reviewed here.

8. MTSO sent checks to all eligible students on June 17, 2020, accompanied by a letter explaining the check. Additionally, eligible students were notified via email that the checks had been sent. The letter and email may be reviewed here.

9. This is MTSO’s final quarterly posting and it covers all remaining HEERF fund expenditures for CARES Act tranche of Student Portion funds. This line was added in June 2021.
